The Center for Service and Leadership is a department within the Division of Student Life that strives to help students engage in a multitude of activities meant to help the surrounding communities and become an active citizen. The CSL has raised thousands of dollars for multiple charities over the years, as well as served thousands of volunteer service-hours in various locations.
Al’s Pals is a mentoring program for elementary students in 1st through 5th grade throughout the Tuscaloosa community. For 10 weeks of the fall or spring semester from 2:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., UA students in Al’s Pals go into the classroom and help students complete their homework and participate in recreational activities. This is a great way to give back to our Tuscaloosa community and meet other UA students who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of children. Bama Year One is a freshman, small group leadership experience that will help you develop skills related to ethical, service-based leadership. In Bama Year One, you are placed in a small group of 15-20 other first-year students and two Upperclassmen students who serve as small group leaders. Bama Year One is a great way to meet friends, learn from Upperclassmen during your first year at UA, and gain a connection to serving in your community. Beat Auburn Beat Hunger (BABH) is a statewide food drive campaign lasting seven weeks leading up to the Iron Bowl against Auburn University in November. BABH collects food for the West Alabama Food Bank and Auburn collects food for the East Alabama Food Bank, all in the name of fighting food insecurity in the state of Alabama. A little friendly competition never hurt anyone! Help UA in the challenge to collect more non-perishable food items than Auburn. All of the food donated goes back to the state of Alabama in the end. Beyond Bama: Alternative Breaks is your opportunity to get involved with communities throughout the state of Alabama, the country, and the globe to engage in active service and experiential learning during the Fall, Winter, and Spring Breaks. Beyond Bama trips have focused on social issues in the past such as: literacy, poverty, food insecurity, homelessness, and the environment. The University of Alabama chapter of Habitat for Humanity is housed in the Center for Service and Leadership. The UA chapter of Habitat for Humanity hosts multiple “build days” out in the Tuscaloosa community, awareness events, fundraisers on campus, and rehabilitation projects you can get involved with during your time at UA. The University of Alabama Dance Marathon (UADM) is a student-run philanthropy that raises money for Children’s of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama.
