Ready, Set, Fresh Start for You!

Dear First Year Students,

Welcome back to The University of Alabama and Tuscaloosa! The spring semester tends to bring new opportunities and a fresh start. Last semester, if things didn’t go as well as you had hoped with academics or friendships, there is always the hope and excitement that comes with the new year! Many of you may be relieved to be back at school and not having to deal with the rules that come with living at home. Some of you may be stressing to find roommates and an apartment to live in next year. Others may be wondering how to meet new people or what to do on the weekends without football games. Whatever you may be experiencing, remember that you aren’t stuck in any situation permanently and things can always improve.

If you are struggling to find people to live with for the next school year, reach out to UA Facebook groups to see if anybody needs someone to live with for the next year. You can also ask your friends if they know of anyone who is looking for a roommate and then meet with them to determine if living together could be the right fit for you both. If you find that you regret agreeing to live with a group of people next year, have an open and honest conversation with them about why you feel that way. This may help resolve the issues or you may want to find other roommates who are more similar to you.

Many students find that January means new beginnings and a “do-over” from last semester. I found that January was my chance to find more ways to get involved on campus and also a time to create even more friendships than I had the semester before. If the fall semester was a struggle for you because you had a difficult time breaking out of your shell and meeting new people, try finding different ways to get involved on campus. This way you can meet people with similar interests and passions as you that you may never have found otherwise.

If you’re someone who doesn’t know what to do without football, I promise there are so many fun and interesting activities in Tuscaloosa that you may not even know exist! I love being outdoors, so I really enjoy going to the Tuscaloosa Riverwalk with a group of friends or go running while enjoying the scenery of the Black Warrior. There are also a bunch of restaurants and shops to discover in downtown Tuscaloosa and Northport. Get a group of friends together and try a new restaurant every weekend. Not having football on Saturdays also provides the chance for you to do some travelling. Nashville, New Orleans, and Atlanta are all great places to go discover that are completely doable in a weekend. Take the chance to discover a new place while making lasting friendships and memories!

Overall, January can bring with it a lot of new chances and opportunities to grow. Make sure that you take this time to build on friendships that you made last semester as well as find ways to improve in areas that you may be lacking in, such as academics or extracurricular involvement. Cheers to the new year!!
